In 1962, U.S. Army veteran Pete Seibert and local ranch owner Earl Eaton opened the area's first resort, the Vail Ski Resort, named for nearby Vail Pass, and shortly afterward, in 1966, the town of Vail was founded. Since then it has grown into North America's largest ski area! Vail's happy permanent residents as of 2005 are estimated to be 4,589.
